History of the Wall of Fame

The concept of the Wall of Fame originated at Columbia Housing Authority. In 1988, CHA's executive Director was concerned about the absence of positive role models in the lives of children living in public housing.  He believed that if children could see former public housing residents achieve success it would encourage them to set higher goals and standards for themselves.  It was that believe that inspired the formation of the Wall of Fame at CHA.

In 2015, after being inspired by the ceremony at CHA, Dr. Tim Hunter and Melissa Mendenhall with the Newberry School District approached Newberry Housing Board with the vision to start this event here in Newberry. The idea was received with great enthusiasm and after months of work the dream is realized today.

The School District and Newberry Housing Authority plan to continue honoring those individuals who have persevered in life.  We hope to inspire others to set goals and always strive to do your best and reach for the stars.  To be eligible to receive this honor a person must be a former resident, either through Public Housing or Section 8, must have achieved success in their chosen career field and must be recognized as someone who gives back to the community.
